Thinking about taking the big plunge into married life? Here are six simple steps to follow to help your proposal go through with ease.

Firstly it is a very good idea to discuss marriage first. Talk to your partner about what you want from the future. The importance of this cannot be understated. Before you propose it is incredibly important to make sure that you both want similar things. For example, you may want children, yet your partner may be completely against the idea. Getting these conversations out of the way now will save you a lot of difficulty and potential heartache in the future.

Next you will probably want to look for an engagement ring, the vast majority of proposals include one. Before you do this try to assess whether your girlfriend would want to choose thing ring herself. However, most will be more than happy to let you choose. Be sure to pick a ring that both fits her finger, and compliments her taste in jewelry. Look to the jewelry she currently wears for an idea. If she does not wear a ring you could always try to secretly measure the circumference of her finger, for example, when she is asleep.

You will then need to get her parent’s blessing. While this step is due to traditional etiquette than anything else, (after all if they say no will that really stop you?) it still shows that you have respect for them which will bode well for the future and will be much appreciated by your fiancée to be as well.

Begin to plan your proposal. While the thought of a spontaneous wedding proposal may seem romantic, the best proposals are often thought through in depth and undergo a lot of planning. You and your partner will remember the day of the proposal for the rest of your lives so take the time to make sure that you have considered everything you possibly can to make it truly special.

Make your proposal simple. While planning your wedding proposal it is all to easy to over complicate things. A classic mistake is to get too involved in making sure that everything else goes just the way you want it to that somehow the proposal gets lost in all the details. Yes, do try to make it exceptional, but when it comes down to popping the question, simply drop to one knee and ask.

Make your proposal personal. You are asking to marry an individual with individual thoughts, and individual feelings. You will have forged unique memories of together; so let this show in your proposal. Does your girlfriend love to travel? Then arrange a romantic weekend away. Does she have a favorite restaurant? Take her there first. Whatever you do, make your proposal private, proposals in public in front of a large audience are not common, and while they may seem romantic can be extremely nerve-racking. Whatever you do, make sure that your wedding proposal is a personal moment that the two of you can share and cherish for the rest of your lives.
